When Johnny joined the army, all the hometown folks was proud;
They hung his picture at the grocery store;
Now the picture’s edged in black, ‘cause he won’t be coming back
And no one writes good songs about the war.

CHORUS

About the war … about the war …
Does anyone recall what it was for?
Send the kids off overseas, and they come home to rest in peace
And no one writes good songs about the war.

Everyone remembers Katy as the girl who fixed their cars;
She was gonna run the station when dad got old;
Now dad works the place alone since they sent Katy’s body home
And no one writes good songs about the war.

CHORUS

In the park, they’ve built a stone for all the kids that can’t come home;
It says we’re proud of them forever more;
They wrote the names real small, so they’d have room to list them all
And no one writes good songs about the war.

CHORUS

Repeat last line of chorus, then first line of first verse to end.

My mistake. I thought you wrote "The Hanging" too. Thanks for sharing a great song!

This may be a little too late--but would like to congratulate you. I see the beauty John Tams saw--raw and simple honesty. My own daughter just recently signed a six year contract with the United States Air Force. I've had people ask me, "How could you let her do that?" She had a choice. She was "of age." Don't think I didn't warn her, and what if my beautiful girl were "Katie?" "The Hanging" is also a beautiful song. The female vocalist reminds me a great deal of Emmy Lou Harris. You go!!
