Dancing in December

V1
We had no shame
Dancing in December
In the freezing rain
With no scarves we felt the bite
Warmed up in the flames
Of soft and sparkling embers
Bared our hearts for days
In the hue of Christmas time

Chorus
But you’d be gone one year
You ran your fingers through my hair
Tried to dry the tears
That’s what lovers do

V2
We felt the pain
Devoted in December
You boarded a plane
That flew you towards demise
They had no shame
Fighting in December
Mortar fell like rain
From a desert purple sky

Chorus
You’d be gone one year
You ran your fingers through my hair
Tried to rest my fears
That’s what heroes do

V3
Still felt the same
In late September
When choosing her name
‘Cause that’s what families do
Alone we traveled home
Where I tucked her in your uniform
As I held her close
I wondered if you knew

V4
Tried to refrain
From folding your dress blues away
But I buried a bronze star
In a wounded purple heart
It could never redeem love
Or compensate the loss of you
Never gleam enough
For the child you never knew

Chorus
You would have loved her song
Lullabyed her fears away
Taught her to stand strong
That’s what fathers do

Tag
We knew no shame
Dancing in December
Mortar fell like rain
From deserted purple sky

Nice work Ellen!

— Randon

There are umpteen collections of the music of legendary folkie storyteller and agitator "Dylan" but almost all of them sound like they were recorded in a refrigerator box. This one qualifies as genuine news.

— Jessica

"Dancing in December" is a typical masterstroke: It's a near-perfect doppelgänger for the early-Sixtise

— Mat

As you can see, the whole group voted for you. :) Beautiful song. No matter how this turns out, you are the "winner" in our eyes.

— Sam L.

Last day 'til closing. We're rootin' for ya!

— Timothy W.

That was so beautiful and sad. Captures the true cost of brutal, insane wars. But you and your daughter are beautiful spirits as is your fallen mate and like the song from the movie Titanic, his body may be gone but he "goes on"......! And you are a winner in this contest regardless of the outcome of it! Carry on...

— Jim S.

Moving; beautifully written; and the perfect arrangement for the story line.

It's not often a song can bring me to tears, but this one does. War... is such a terrible thing for those who must fight and those who are left behind. Indeed, the warmongers should be ashamed; they should be, but I guess they aren't. All the world's pathos is in this song.
